He was a very important figure in the Catholic Church during his time. Tetzel served as an inquisitor for Poland and Saxony. This meant he was a person who checked on religious beliefs. Later, he became the Grand Commissioner for indulgences in Germany. An indulgence is a way to lessen punishments in purgatory due to sin. Tetzel's main job was to grant these indulgences to people. He did this in exchange for money called tithes.

Tetzel used his skills to collect a lot of money. Much of this money was meant to help build St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. However, half of the money also went to Cardinal Albert of Brandenburg. This helped pay off debts from his appointment as an archbishop. Tetzel was very good at persuading people to give money. He often told people that they could get access to heaven. He even suggested this could help souls that were already dead in purgatory. He even used a famous rhyme to help people understand. The rhyme said that as soon as gold rings in a box, a soul springs to heaven.

Tetzel was born in Pirna, Saxony, around the year 1465. He spent many years studying at Leipzig University. There, he learned about theology and philosophy. He joined the Dominican order in 1489. In 1502, Cardinal Giovanni de' Medici asked him to preach the Jubilee indulgence. He did this work for much of his life. Tetzel earned several high degrees from his studies. He became a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 1517. He later became a Doctor of Sacred Theology in 1518. He earned these by defending the ideas of indulgences in debates.

Many people had strong feelings about how Tetzel worked. A famous thinker named Martin Luther disagreed with his methods. Luther was inspired to write his Ninety-five Theses because of Tetzel. This caused a very large scandal in the Church. Some people even accused Tetzel of being dishonest or immoral. One story says a nobleman once attacked Tetzel after a disagreement. The man was angry about a letter he bought for a future sin. Tetzel died in 1519 at a monastery in Leipzig. He was very tired from all the arguments surrounding him.
