Because of his family, he began his religious career very early in life.

Leo's path to becoming pope involved many steps and big changes. He became a cardinal when he was only thirteen years old in 1489. This is a high position in the church. He studied theology and law at Pisa to prepare for his work. In 1513, the other leaders in the church met to choose a new pope. After some debate, Giovanni was elected and became Leo X. He was crowned on March 19, 1513, at the age of 37. He was actually the last pope who was not already a priest when he was chosen.

He also helped with the rebuilding of the huge St. Peter's Basilica. Leo liked to study old books and poetry from a time called the Renaissance. He even asked a writer named Marco Girolamo Vida to write a long poem about Jesus. He also helped organize the Roman University to support new studies.

However, his time as pope also included many difficult and expensive tasks. Leo X led a war in 1517 to help his nephew, Lorenzo, become the Duke of Urbino. This war lasted for eight months and cost a huge amount of money.

This spending made the church's finances very low. During this time, a man named Martin Luther began to challenge the church. Luther wrote many ideas about how the church should work. Leo did not agree with these new ideas. In 1520, Leo wrote a document to say that Luther was wrong.

Leo X's life shows how much one person can influence the world. He worked to protect his family's power in Italy while also managing a global religion. He faced many hard jobs, like planning to protect Europe from the Ottoman sultan, Selim I. Even though there were many disagreements, his love for art left a lasting mark on history. He died in Rome in 1521 and was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. His life was a mix of beautiful art and very serious political struggles.
