Becoming pope was a very big event. Many people in the Church had different ideas about him. Some leaders even tried to stop him from being elected. However, several cardinals worked to help his chances. They had many talks to see who could win. On August 6, 1623, the cardinals chose him. He took the name Urban VIII.

These wars and his art projects were very expensive. He started with a debt of 16 million scudi. By 1635, the debt grew to 28 million scudi. This huge debt made things hard for the popes who came after him.

Urban VIII also had many different views on science and faith. He was against the ideas of the astronomer Galileo. He ordered a trial for Galileo in 1633.
