He was born as Bartolomeo Prignano in a place called Itri. It was part of the Kingdom of Naples back then. Before he became pope, he lived as a monk. He was also a very smart student and a learned man. People knew him for being simple and careful with money. He even worked as a vice-chancellor for a time.

His path to the papacy began in a very busy time. In March 1378, the old pope died. A large crowd in Rome surrounded the place where leaders met. They wanted a Roman pope to be chosen right away. Because of this pressure, the cardinals chose Prignano on April 8, 1378. He took the name Urban VI. He was the last pope elected from outside the group of cardinals.

Things became difficult very quickly after his election. Urban VI wanted to change how the church worked. He told the cardinals they should not take expensive gifts. He also wanted them to stop living such fancy lives. This made many of the French cardinals very angry. They left Rome and met in a place called Anagni. There, they chose a different man to be pope named Clement VII. This started a long split called the Western Schism.

This split divided much of Europe into two sides. Many lands like France and Scotland followed the new pope in Avignon. Other places like England and parts of Germany supported Urban VI. This division led to many fights and even wars. One such fight was the War of the Eight Saints. It was a very hard time for many people living in those lands. Money was also scarce because the church was divided.

Urban VI had a very stormy life as a leader. He once had to hide in a castle called Nocera. He was stuck there for six months during a siege. He eventually escaped to Genoa using six ships. Later in his life, he fell from a mule while traveling. He died on October 15, 1389. His time as pope was marked by great conflict and many big changes.
