Before he became pope, Paschal II had a different life. He was born as Raniero Raineri di Bleda. His home was near Forlì in a place called Romagna. He became a monk at the Abbey of Cluny at a young age. Later, Pope Gregory VII made him a cardinal-priest. He served at the church of San Clemente. He was eventually chosen to follow Pope Urban II. Paschal II dealt with many hard jobs and big struggles. He spent much time in a fight over investiture. This was a struggle with the Holy Roman emperors. He wanted the Church to have more power. Henry V was a leader who fought with him. Henry V was the son of Emperor Henry IV. In February 1111, the two leaders made a compact. They hoped to settle their many disagreements.

Life was not always easy for the pope. In 1111, the people of Rome rose in revolt against Henry V. The king had to leave, and he took the pope with him. Paschal II was held in prison for 61 days. This was a very harsh time for him. Eventually, he gave in to Henry's demands. Henry V was then crowned in St. Peter's on April 13, 1111. Later, church leaders declared that the deals made in prison were not valid.

Paschal II also did many things to help the Church grow. He ordered the building of the basilica of Santi Quattro Coronati. He also visited France in 1106. There, he helped the church of Notre Dame at La Charité-sur-Loire. At that time, it was the second largest church in Europe. In 1113, he issued a special paper called a bull. It was named Pie Postulatio Voluntatis. This paper protected the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. This group is known today as the Order of Malta.
