Pope Eugene III was a leader of the Catholic Church.

He ruled from 1145 until his death in 1153. Before he was pope, he was a monk in the Cistercian Order. He was the very first person from this order to lead the Church. People knew him as a gentle and quiet man. Some thought he was too simple for such a big job.

He was born near the city of Pisa. His family history is a bit of a mystery. Some believe he came from a rich group called the Paganelli di Montemagno. Other stories say he came from a very humble background.

His path to becoming pope was quite unusual. He was a student and friend of Bernard of Clairvaux. Bernard was a very powerful leader in the Western Church. When the previous pope died in 1145, the leaders chose Bernardo. They chose him partly because the job was so dangerous. Many people did not want to be the leader at that time. Bernard was actually surprised by the choice. He even wrote letters saying a simple man should not be on a throne. However, Bernard later helped the new pope by using his own influence.

Being the leader of the Church in Rome was a hard job.

Many citizens in Rome did not want him to rule their city. They wanted to follow their own rules instead. Because of this, Eugene III could not live in Rome for most of his time as pope. He had to move to many different places to stay safe. He lived in cities like Viterbo, Siena, and even went to France. He sometimes stayed in a fortress called Tusculum near Rome. He even asked the King of Sicily for help with his problems.

One of his biggest tasks was calling for the Second Crusade. This happened after the city of Edessa fell in 1144. Eugene asked King Louis VII of France to join the fight. He also spoke to King Conrad III of Germany at a meeting in Speyer. The crusade was meant to win back lands for the Christians. Sadly, the mission did not work out as planned. The crusaders stayed for only five days during one siege. They did not win any land and lost many people and supplies.

Eugene III also tried to help people in their private lives. He met King Louis VII and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Their marriage was having many problems after the crusade failed. Eugene tried to help them be kind to each other again. He even asked them to sleep in the same bed to help them talk. He could not fix their relationship, so he eventually let them end the marriage. Eugene died in July 1153 at a place called Tivoli. He was buried in the Vatican with great respect.
