He ruled the Papal States from late 1294 until his death in 1303. Before he became pope, he was known as Benedetto Caetani. He came from a powerful family with many connections to the church. His family had roots in the baronial class of the Papal States. This background helped him move through the different levels of church power. He was born in the town of Anagni, southeast of Rome.

Benedetto spent many years preparing for his high role. He began his religious life at a monastery in Velletri. Later, he moved to Todi to study law. He deeply loved Todi and called it the place of his youth.

He worked as a secretary for important church leaders on missions to France. He also traveled to England to help manage church taxes. During his travels, he served as a rector for a church in Towcester. These early jobs taught him how to handle many difficult tasks.

As pope, Boniface VIII had very strong ideas about power. He believed the church should have authority over both spiritual and worldly matters.

He worked to organize church rules into a new book. This book was called the Liber Sextus, and it was finished in 1298. This collection of laws became a very important tool for lawyers. He also started the first Catholic jubilee year in Rome. This was a special time for people to visit the city.

His strong views often caused big arguments with other leaders. He had many quarrels with King Philip IV of France. The king wanted to tax the church and control its members.

This conflict became very serious in September 1303. King Philip's troops went to Anagni to capture the pope. They held Boniface for three days at his own home. The pope died just one month after this event. His life was marked by these many struggles with kings.

Many famous people from history reacted to his life and work. The writer Dante Alighieri even wrote about him in a famous poem. Dante expected the pope to face punishment in the afterlife.

After Boniface died, King Philip tried to hold a trial for him. The trial happened after the pope was already gone. He was accused of being a heretic, which is someone with wrong beliefs. However, the leaders never reached a final verdict against him. His legacy remains a major part of church history.
