He was born Sinibaldo Fieschi in Genoa. His family, the Fieschi, were noble merchants from Liguria. Sinibaldo was a very smart student of law. He studied at the universities of Parma and Bologna. He was known as an expert in canon law. This is the law used by the Church.

In 1243, the cardinals elected Sinibaldo as the new pope.

He chose the name Innocent IV. He did not want the job at first. He had inherited a big fight over land. The Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II, had taken Church lands. This struggle was very difficult for the new pope. Frederick II even tried to stop the cardinals from meeting. This led to a very tense time for the Church. The two leaders could not agree on how to share power.

Because of these fights, Innocent IV had to flee Rome.

He left in June 1244 to stay safe. He traveled in a disguise to hide who he was. He went to the port of Civitavecchia and then to Genoa. Eventually, he moved to France and lived in Lyon. In Lyon, he held a large meeting called a council. About 140 bishops came to this meeting in 1245.

The council decided to remove Frederick II from his power. They used a process called excommunication to do this.

Innocent IV had many different ideas about power. He believed the Pope was the Vicar of Christ. This meant he thought the Pope was above earthly kings. He used this belief to help many different rulers. He helped leaders in Portugal and Bohemia. He even tried to influence the Mongols in the East. He also allowed crusades in places like Prussia and Livonia. He issued a special paper called a bull to allow this. These papers helped guide the actions of the Church.

In 1252, the Pope issued a law called Ad extirpanda. This law was about how to treat heretics. Heretics are people with different religious beliefs. The law allowed officials to use torture to get information. It said they should not kill or break limbs. This was a very serious and difficult part of his rule. Innocent IV died in Naples on 7 December 1254. He died while following the army of the Church. His life was full of big decisions for Europe.
