He was born Jacques Duèze in 1244. He became the head of the Church in 1316. He lived in a city called Avignon. This was a time when popes lived in France instead of Rome. John was the second and longest-reigning Avignon Pope.

He was known for being a very good administrator. This means he was very good at organizing how things worked. He was also a very strong leader who liked to make many rules.

John worked hard to reorganize the Church and its money. He was a very busy man who dealt with many leaders. For example, he sent a letter to a Muslim ruler named Özbeg Khan. John thanked the ruler for being kind to Christians.

He also helped make a thinker named Thomas Aquinas a saint. This was a big job that took many years of study. In 1323, John finally finished this process. He looked at many records and heard from 111 different witnesses. This helped him decide that Aquinas was a holy man.

Much of John's time was spent dealing with big disagreements. One major conflict was with a ruler named Louis IV. Louis was the Holy Roman Emperor.

They fought a lot about who should have the most power. Because of these fights, Louis even tried to set up a different pope. This person was called an antipope. The struggle lasted for a long time. It caused many people to flee from Avignon. Even the papal palace in Bologna was destroyed during a revolt in 1334.

John also had many debates with a group called the Franciscans. These were religious men who had special ideas about being poor. Some Franciscans believed that Jesus and his followers owned absolutely nothing.

John did not agree with this idea. He wrote many special documents called papal bulls to explain his views. He believed that the Church had a right to own things. This caused a lot of trouble with thinkers like William of Ockham. These debates were about what it meant to be truly holy.

John XXII lived a very long life for that time. He was nearly 90 years old when he died.

He dealt with kings, emperors, and many different religious ideas. Even today, people study the many rules he made. His long reign changed how the Church was run for many years.
