However, his political actions caused bitter quarrels with powerful kings. He had a major conflict with King Philip IV of France. In 1296, Philip tried to tax the clergy and control their legal administration. Boniface responded by excommunicating the king and others who blocked the clergy. Many famous figures reacted to Boniface's life and controversial methods. The writer Dante Alighieri criticized him in his famous work, the Divine Comedy. Dante placed him in the eighth circle of Hell among the simoniacs. Simoniacs are people accused of buying or selling religious offices.
