In 1208, Francis began a new way of living. He wore a simple wool tunic tied with a rope.

He wanted to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Within a year, he had eleven followers joining him. In 1209, he led these men to Rome. They sought permission from Pope Innocent III to start an order. The Pope agreed to support them on April 16, 1210. This became the official start of the Franciscan Order. This group was also known as the Lesser Brothers.

Francis helped many different groups of people grow. A noblewoman named Clare of Assisi joined him in 1212.

Francis was born in the small Italian town of Assisi to a wealthy family. His father, Pietro di Bernardone, was a prosperous silk merchant. His mother, Pica di Bourlemont, was a French noblewoman from Provence. As a young man, Francis lived a high-spirited and lavish life. He enjoyed fine clothes, fine company, and the attention of others. However, his perspective began to change through several specific experiences. One account describes him giving his entire purse of money to a beggar in a marketplace. This act of charity caused great anger in his father and mockery from his friends.

Several key events shaped his transition toward a life of penance. Around 1202, Francis was taken prisoner during a military expedition against Perugia. He spent one year as a captive, and an illness during this time led him to re-evaluate his life. Later, he experienced a mystical vision at the ruined chapel of San Damiano. In this vision, an icon of Christ told him to "repair My church." Francis initially took this literally and sold his father's cloth to fix the building. This led to a major legal conflict with his father. In a public proceeding before the Bishop of Assisi, Francis renounced his father and his entire inheritance.

After renouncing his wealth, Francis embraced the life of a penitent. He spent time wandering as a beggar and working in a monastery. He also spent time nursing people with leprosy in colonies near Assisi. In February 1208, Francis felt inspired by a Gospel reading to devote himself entirely to poverty. He began wearing a coarse woollen tunic tied with a knotted rope. This simple clothing became a symbol of his commitment. He started preaching to ordinary people in the countryside, which was unusual because he lacked an official license.

Francis's example quickly attracted followers, leading to the establishment of organized religious orders. Within one year, he had 11 followers living in a leper colony. In 1209, he wrote the "Primitive Rule" to guide these men. He led them to Rome to seek official recognition from Pope Innocent III. On April 16, 1210, the Pope endorsed the group, officially founding the Franciscan Order, also called the Order of Friars Minor. The order grew rapidly and spread from Umbria throughout Italy. Francis also helped establish the Order of Poor Clares in 1212 for women, led by Clare of Assisi.

Francis was also known for his travels and attempts to bring peace. In 1219, he traveled to Egypt during the Fifth Crusade. He sought to meet with the sultan Al-Kamil to try to end the conflict. In 1223, he arranged the first live nativity scene in Greccio as part of the Christmas celebration. Christian tradition also holds that in 1224, Francis received the stigmata. This means he displayed wounds on his hands and feet that resembled those of Christ. This event occurred during a religious ecstasy involving a seraphic angel.

Francis's legacy remains visible in many parts of the world today. He is a co-patron saint of Italy alongside Catherine of Siena. His influence even extends to geography, as the city of San Francisco is named after him. His feast day is observed on October 4, which has become World Animal Day. Many churches still hold ceremonies to bless animals on this day. He is remembered not just as a religious leader, but as a symbol of peace and connection to the natural world.
