Pope Pius VI was a major religious and political leader.

Before his election, Giovanni Angelo Braschi had a deep education. He was born in Cesena on December 25, 1717. He was the eldest of eight children. He studied at the Jesuit college in Cesena. He later earned doctorates in both canon and civil law. He worked as a private secretary for Cardinal Tommaso Ruffo. He also served as an auditor and a secretary for other high-ranking officials. In 1766, Pope Clement XIII appointed him as the treasurer of the camera apostolica. This role made him a very careful administrator of church finances.
The election of Pius VI involved many different political interests. In 1774, Pope Clement XIV died. This led to a conclave to choose a new leader. Spain, France, and Portugal did not object to Braschi. He was seen as a moderate choice. Some people supported him because they wanted to continue policies regarding the Jesuits. Others, known as the Zelanti, believed he might secretly help the Jesuits. These groups had very different expectations for his leadership. He was elected on February 15, 1775, and took the name Pius VI.
Pius VI took several steps to improve the Papal States. He worked hard to reduce corruption in Rome. He also focused on the state's finances. He created a council of cardinals to manage money and reduce taxes. He even used a reward system to encourage better agriculture. Beyond politics, he was a patron of the arts. He helped expand the Pio-Clementine Museum. He also worked on large engineering projects. These included draining marshes near Città della Pieve, Perugia, and Spoleto. He also restored the ancient Via Appia road and expanded harbors for trade.
His reign was complicated by new religious and political ideas. He faced challenges from Enlightenment thinking. Some thinkers wanted to limit the authority of the pope. In Austria, leaders tried to influence how the Church chose its officials. Pius VI even traveled to Vienna in 1782 to address these concerns. He also dealt with disagreements in the Kingdom of Naples and Tuscany. In 1794, he issued the papal bull Auctorem fidei. This document condemned certain religious propositions. He also saw the Catholic Church grow in the United States. In 1789, he created the Diocese of Baltimore.
The French Revolution brought major conflict to his later years. The revolution began in 1789 and caused the seizure of Church property in France. Pius VI believed these changes were a conspiracy against the Church. He condemned the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. He also viewed the execution of King Louis XVI in 1793 as a sign of the revolution's danger. He even referred to the late king as a martyr. These tensions grew as the French government took control of territories like Avignon. The revolution changed the social and political order of Europe significantly.
Conflict with France eventually led to the end of his rule. In 1796, French troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Italy. The Papal army was defeated by these Republican troops. He was moved from the Vatican through several cities. He was eventually taken to the citadel of Valence in France. He died there on August 29, 1799.
After his death, his body was embalmed. Napoleon saw a political reason to bury him. He allowed the body to be moved back to Rome. Pius VI was buried in January 1800. His followers had wanted him to be buried in Rome all along. His life spanned a time of massive transition in history.
