He even noted that the human body might have evolved from earlier forms. In 1950, he used the power of *ex cathedra* papal infallibility. He used this authority to define the dogma of the Assumption of Mary. 
Pius XII also made significant changes to Church governance. In 1946, he appointed new international cardinals. This action removed the Italian majority within the College of Cardinals. He also issued a Decree against Communism. This decree stated that Catholics following communist doctrines would be excommunicated. This occurred during a time when the Church faced persecution in the Eastern Bloc. Many Catholic clergy faced mass deportations during this period of political tension.
After his death in 1958, he was succeeded by Pope John XXIII. The process to recognize him as a saint began much later. His cause for canonization was opened in 1965 by Pope Paul VI. In 1990, the opening of his beatification process led to him being titled a "Servant of God." Later, in 2009, Benedict XVI declared him "venerable." His life remains a central study in how religious leadership interacts with global politics and modern history.
