He did not finish the entire project before he died. A special supplement was added later to finish the work. This supplement discusses "the last things." The book uses a special way of writing. It starts with objections to an idea. Then, it gives a counter-statement from an authority. Finally, it provides the actual argument to explain the truth.

Thomas used many different sources to build his arguments. He often used the Bible to support his points. He also looked at many ancient and religious writers. He called the thinker Aristotle "the philosopher." Another important writer he cited was Augustine. He also used ideas from Islamic and Jewish scholars. For example, he respected a thinker named Averroes. Aquinas called Averroes "the Commentator." He even used ideas from a Roman legal expert named Ulpian. This mix of sources shows how much he studied.

The Summa has had a huge impact on history. It became a main source for Thomistic philosophy. It even influenced the famous poet Dante Alighieri. Some people call Dante's poem the "Summa in verse."
