He lived from February 20, 1469, until August 9, 1534. People often called him Tommaso de Vio. He was born in Gaeta, which was part of the Kingdom of Naples. As a young man, he joined the Dominican order of monks. He spent his life studying the ideas of Thomas Aquinas. He became a doctor of theology at Padua before he was thirty.

Cajetan held many very important jobs in the Church. He served as the Master of the Order of Preachers from 1508 to 1518. He was also a cardinal starting in 1517. He served as the Archbishop of Palermo and the Bishop of Gaeta. One of his big tasks was acting as a legate for the Pope. This meant he traveled to represent the Pope's authority. He even helped choose a new Pope in 1521. He worked with Cardinal Giulio de' Medici to elect Pope Adrian VI.

One of the most famous parts of his life was his work with Martin Luther.

In 1518, Cajetan was sent to Augsburg to look at Luther's teachings. He was a strong opponent of the Protestant Reformation. He helped write the paper that led to Luther being excommunicated in 1519. Cajetan believed the Pope should have supreme authority. He argued that a council could not rule over a Pope. He believed the Pope was like a shepherd for his sheep. This was a very important debate in history.

Cajetan was also a very busy writer and scholar. He wrote many books and deep notes on the ideas of Aquinas. His notes on the Summa Theologiae were so important that they were studied for five hundred years. He also wrote about the Bible and the Old and New Testaments. He even wrote about how people should trade goods and money. He had some ideas about the morality of trade. He also studied a topic called analogy in his book, The Analogy of Names. This book was considered a very complete resource by other thinkers.

His ideas still matter to people who study history and religion. Pope Leo XIII later said that Cajetan's work helped bring back the study of Thomas Aquinas. This movement is sometimes called Neo-Thomism. Many generations of students learned by reading Aquinas alongside Cajetan's notes. Even though some people thought his views were too independent, he remained a major figure. He died in Rome in 1534. His life shows how much one person can influence the way people think about faith and law.
