People often call him the "Seraphic Doctor" because of his great wisdom. He was officially named a saint by Pope Sixtus IV in 1482. His ideas helped make the Franciscans a very important group in the Church. He wanted to show how faith and thinking work together. He believed that humans use reason to understand the things they believe.

His way of thinking was very special compared to other scholars. Many thinkers of his time focused mostly on logic and science. Bonaventure believed the heart and feelings were just as important as the mind.

He taught that Christ was the true master who helps people find knowledge. This knowledge starts with faith and grows through careful thought. Eventually, he believed people could reach a deep connection with God. He used ideas from thinkers like Augustine to explain how the world works.

Bonaventure was born in Civita di Bagnoregio near Viterbo. He was the son of Giovanni di Fidanza and Maria di Ritella.

As a young man, he joined the Franciscan Order in 1243. He went to the University of Paris to study hard. He became a master there in 1255. He was also friends with another famous thinker named Thomas Aquinas. They both studied very deep questions about life and God.

He wrote many important books during his life. One of his biggest works is called the Commentary on the Sentences. He wrote this when he was only twenty-seven years old.

Another famous book is called The Mind's Road to God. He also wrote books to help other Franciscans in their spiritual lives. Some books were even given to him by mistake in the past. These are called "Pseudo-Bonaventure" books because he did not actually write them.

Bonaventure died suddenly in 1274 at a meeting in Lyon. Many years later, people found his body in a new church. They noticed his head was perfectly preserved, which people saw as a miracle.

Because of this, the city of Lyon made him their patron. Later history was difficult for his remains in France. During the French Revolution, the place where he was kept was destroyed. Today, the only piece of him left is his hand. This hand is kept in a church in Bagnoregio.
