He was a priest and a member of the Franciscan order. He was born in Scotland a long time ago. People believe he was born between 1265 and 1266. He studied and taught at great schools in Oxford and Paris. He is remembered as one of the most important thinkers of his time. His work helped shape how people think about faith and reason.

He had many deep ideas that people still study today. One idea is called the "univocity of being." This means the concept of existence applies to everything that exists. He also had an idea called "haecceity," or "thisness." This is the special quality that makes a single thing unique. He also spoke about a "formal distinction" between different parts of one thing. These ideas helped people understand how individuals and groups work. He even used logic to argue for the existence of God.

Scotus lived during a time of great change in Europe. He likely came from a leading family in Scotland. His name suggests he may have been from a place called Duns. He joined the Franciscan order in Dumfries. His uncle, Elias Duns, was a leader there. He was ordained as a priest in Northampton, England, in 1291. This is the first certain date we have for his life. He was a very busy scholar and a teacher.

He spent much of his life at famous universities. He was in Oxford around the year 1300. Later, he began lecturing at the University of Paris. He was once asked to leave Paris because of a disagreement. He eventually moved to a school in Cologne. Some say he left Paris very suddenly. He was talking with students when he received his orders. He left with almost no personal belongings. He died in Cologne on November 8, 1308.

Many of his ideas are found in his famous books. His most important work was a commentary on the "Sentences." This work contains his most famous arguments. He also wrote about the ideas of the philosopher Aristotle. Some people call the tradition of his thought "Scotism." He was given the title "Doctor Subtilis." This means "the subtle doctor" because of his deep thinking. Even today, scholars look at his words to learn about the world.
