He was a priest and a member of the Franciscan order. He was born in Scotland a long time ago. People believe he was born between 1265 and 1266. He studied and taught at great schools in Oxford and Paris.

He was known for his very deep way of thinking. People called him the "subtle doctor." He had several big ideas that people still study. One idea was called "thisness." This idea says that every single thing has a special quality. This quality makes it a unique individual. He also had a big idea about "being." He thought that the idea of existence applies to everything.

He wrote many books to explain his views. One of his most famous works was a commentary on the Sentences. This book helped him share his thoughts on God and the world. He died in the city of Cologne in 1308.
