Nicomachean Ethics

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The Nicomachean Ethics is a famous book written by Aristotle. It is a study of ethics, which is the science of what is good for human life. Aristotle believed that all our actions aim toward a specific goal or end. This book is not just about thinking about big ideas. Instead, it aims to be a practical help for people. It focuses on the question of how to best live a life. This theme was also explored by his teacher, Plato.

Aristotle explains how people can reach the highest good. He uses the Greek word eudaimonia to describe this state. Many people translate this word as "flourishing" or "happiness." To reach this, a person must act with virtue. A virtue is a helpful habit that leads to excellence. People build a stable character by practicing righteous actions over time. These habits eventually become a part of who they are. This process turns simple actions into a lasting way of living.

There is a mystery regarding the name of the book. The title likely refers to someone named Nicomachus. One theory is that the work was dedicated to Aristotle's son. Another idea is that it was edited by his son. It is also possible it was named for Aristotle's father. Some scholars think the book was actually made of lecture notes. These notes might have been for students or for a teacher to use.

History shows how important these ideas became over many centuries. In the Middle Ages, the book was a core work of philosophy. Thinkers like Thomas Aquinas used it to help explain Christian theology. Albertus Magnus also helped bring these ideas into that time period. Even in the seventeenth century, it was a main authority at many universities. Many people wrote commentaries about the book before the year 1682.

Today, many modern philosophers are looking at Aristotle's ideas again. This is often called the virtue ethics revival. Famous thinkers like Martha Nussbaum and Alasdair MacIntyre study these topics. Aristotle's work also connects to the study of politics. While ethics looks at how individuals live, politics looks at the whole community. He believed that good social institutions help people become good. This link between the person and the community is still very important.
