The Crusades were a long series of military campaigns. They took place between 1095 and 1291.

Western Christians fought to reclaim the Holy Land from Muslim rulers. This region included important places like Jerusalem. The leaders of the Catholic Church encouraged these trips. They promised spiritual rewards to those who joined. Many people believed these journeys were a way to show their faith.

These campaigns worked through organized religious and social systems. To pay for the trips, the Church used special taxes. They also used something called crusade indulgences. These were promises of spiritual benefits for participants. Many fighters sewed a cross onto their clothing. This helped people identify them as members of the movement.

Large groups also formed military orders to help defend the lands. These groups helped manage the huge costs of war.

History shows that the movement began with Pope Urban II. In November 1095, he spoke at the Council of Clermont in France.

He called for Christians to reconquer Jerusalem. The First Crusade was successful at first. It led to the creation of four Crusader states in the Levant.

These new lands were meant to be held by Western Christians.

Many different leaders and battles shaped this long era. A famous leader named Saladin united Egypt and Syria. He defeated the Crusader armies at the Battle of Hattin in 1187.

This led to the Third Crusade, though Jerusalem stayed under Muslim rule. Later, the Fourth Crusade went to the Byzantine Empire. In 1204, it resulted in the Sack of Constantinople.

Eventually, the Mamluks captured the last mainland strongholds in 1291.

These events changed how people in Europe saw the world. The Crusades were linked to the idea of religious pilgrimage. People had traveled to holy sites for a very long time. This movement turned those peaceful journeys into armed expeditions. The word "crusade" itself comes from the idea of taking the cross.

Even though the wars ended, the history of these travels remained. They showed how religion and politics could shape huge parts of history.
