The Third Crusade was a major military effort from 1189 to 1192. It began after a leader named Saladin captured the city of Jerusalem in 1187.

This loss was a huge event for people in Europe. Because of the leaders involved, many people call it the Kings' Crusade. The main goal was to take back the Holy Land. This period was a time of great religious focus and conflict.

To prepare for the fight, leaders had to gather many resources. King Henry II of England and King Philip II of France stopped fighting each other. They wanted to work together instead. They even started a new tax called the Saladin tithe. This was a ten percent tax on income and goods. This money helped pay for the long journey. Many different groups of fighters joined from many places.

Three very powerful leaders led the different armies. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of Germany led a very large and organized group. He was sixty-six years old when he started his journey. He moved his army across the Balkans and Anatolia. However, he died while crossing a river on 10 June 1190.

His death made his soldiers very sad. Most of them decided to go back home.

Other leaders continued the work in the Holy Land. King Richard I of England took command after Henry II died. King Philip II of France also led his troops. They fought hard to win back important places. The Crusaders successfully took the cities of Acre and Jaffa. They also won a big victory at the Battle of Arsuf.

This helped them control much of the coast.

Even with these wins, the Crusaders did not take Jerusalem. On 2 September 1192, Richard and Saladin signed the Treaty of Jaffa. This treaty was a way to end the fighting. It allowed Saladin to keep control of Jerusalem. However, it let Christian travelers and merchants visit the city safely.
