Urban worked in many different ways to lead his people. He used diplomacy, which means he used careful talk to solve problems. He helped arrange marriages between noble families to make peace. He also helped leaders like Anselm of Canterbury. One big thing he did was start a new system. He set up the Roman Curia to run the church. This worked like a royal court for the church. It helped the pope manage things much better.

Before he was pope, Urban had a different life. He was born in France to a noble family. His family came from a place called Châtillon-sur-Marne. He began his studies at a school in Reims in 1050. Later, he served as the prior of the abbey of Cluny. He was also the bishop of Ostia. These roles helped him prepare to lead the whole church. He was a very active supporter of church reforms.

He asked people to go on the First Crusade. He wanted them to take back the Holy Land. He promised that God would forgive their past sins. This promise was a very strong reason for people to go. Many people joined the journey to find religious rewards.

Urban's ideas connected many different parts of the world. He dealt with the Turkish invasions in Anatolia. He also spoke to leaders from the Byzantine Empire. His words helped bring people from many lands together. Even though he started this movement, he did not see the end. He died on July 29, 1099. He passed away before he heard the news of success. Many years later, in 1881, the church honored him formally.
