His leadership helped start a movement that changed history.

Peter led a group known as the People's Crusade. This group was made of many poor people and peasants. They were often called the Crusade of the Paupers. Peter told them they were holy and protected by God. However, he did not give them weapons or food. He did not train them to be a real army. Most of his followers were not soldiers. They traveled from places like England, France, and Flanders.

They arrived in Cologne, Germany, on April 12, 1096.

As the group traveled, they caused much harm to others. In the spring of 1096, they were part of the Rhineland massacres. Peter's followers attacked Jewish people in many cities. These places included Cologne, Worms, Speyer, and Mainz. In Mainz, they killed a large group of Jews. These people had been given safety by a local bishop. Some say between 2,000 and 10,000 people were killed. This was a very sad and violent time for Jewish civilians.

The journey to the Holy Land was very difficult. The group faced many fights and many hardships. In Zemun, a riot led to a fight that killed 4,000 Hungarians. Later, the army marched through Belgrade and Nish. On the road to Sofia, Byzantine soldiers attacked them. The Crusaders lost a quarter of their people in that fight. When they reached Constantinople, the Emperor was worried. He had to find food for the huge crowd of hungry people.

The group was eventually sent across the water to face the Turks.

At the Battle of Civetot, the Turks ambushed the pilgrims. Most of the people in Peter's group were killed or taken as slaves. Peter survived and joined the group of professional soldiers. He helped them during the siege of Antioch and the siege of Jerusalem. He even helped lead special walks around the walls of Jerusalem. Some people believe he was the one who truly started the whole crusade. Other historians say this is just a legend.
