He lived during the Middle Ages and was a member of the Benedictine Order. This was a group of brothers in the Catholic Church. Many historians wonder exactly where he was born. Some believe he was from Scala in Campania, Italy. Others think he might have been from Amalfi or even Lower Burgundy in France. Most people know him as a man who dedicated his life to helping others.

Gerard's work mostly happened in the city of Jerusalem. Around the year 1080, he was put in charge of a hospital. This hospital was located at Muristan. It was built near the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist. During hard times, like the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099, Gerard stayed to care for the sick. He did not leave them behind. He worked to make sure people received the care they needed. This kindness helped his hospital grow into something much bigger.

Because of his hard work, Gerard founded a famous group. This group is called the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Many people also call them the Knights Hospitaller. In 1113, Pope Paschal II gave the group official recognition. This meant they were a new, independent religious order. They were no longer just part of a local monastery. They could own their own property and choose their own leaders. Gerard became the very first Grand Master of this powerful organization.

As the group grew, it became very wealthy and helpful. Gerard set up many more hospitals in different places. These were built in cities like Bari, Pisa, and Messina. These hospitals were placed along the paths that travelers took to reach Jerusalem. The Hospitallers were very special because they helped everyone. They did not care about a person's religion or where they were from. They even called their patients "our lords, the sick" to show great respect.

Gerard died in the early years of the 1100s. Some records say he died on September 3, 1120. People have told many stories about his life for hundreds of years. Some legends say he used his cloak to hide bread for hungry people. Others say he was a very humble man who served the poor. Today, many places still keep special items that belonged to him. You can find his image in stained glass windows and old paintings. His legacy of helping the sick continues to be remembered.
