He was born in Ravenna, Italy, around the year 1007. His family was noble but they were quite poor. After his parents died, an older brother treated him poorly. Peter worked as a swineherd during this difficult time. Later, another brother named Damianus helped him. Damianus was an archpriest in Ravenna. He gave Peter a chance to study hard. Peter became a famous teacher by the age of 25. He studied theology and law in places like Faenza and Parma.

Around the year 1035, Peter decided to change his life. He left his old job to become a monk.

He lived in a lonely place called a hermitage. This place was named Fonte Avellana near Gubbio. Peter was very serious about his religious life. He practiced very strict rules to show his devotion. This was sometimes hard on his health. He even struggled with not being able to sleep. Later, he became the prior, or leader, of the monastery. He stayed in this role until he died in 1072.

Peter wanted to fix many problems in the church.

He saw that some leaders were not following the rules. Some people were buying and selling church offices. This was called simony. Peter wrote many books to fight these bad habits. One book he wrote was called Liber Gomorrhianus. He sent this book to Pope Leo IX around the year 1050. He also wrote a book called Liber Gratissimus in 1053. This book helped decide if certain leaders were truly valid. He believed that religion should be the most important thing. He even thought philosophy should serve religion like a servant.

Because he was so wise, the Pope gave him a high rank. In 1057, Pope Stephen IX made him a cardinal.

This was a big job with many duties. Peter did not want this role at first. He preferred being a quiet hermit. However, he traveled to many different lands to help. He went to Milan to stop arguments among the clergy. He also traveled to France and Germany. In Germany, he spoke to Emperor Henry IV. He helped the Emperor decide not to divorce his wife, Bertha. He worked very hard to keep peace in the church.

Peter Damian died in February of 1072 or 1073. He fell ill with a fever near Faenza. He spent his last days at a monastery. People still remember him as a great thinker today. On September 27, 1828, he was named a Doctor of the Church. This is a very special honor for his ideas. His feast day is celebrated on February 21. Many people look to his life as an example of being brave. He was a man who loved quiet places but was not afraid to speak up. His life shows how one person can try to make big changes.
