Cædmon was the very first English poet whose name we still know today.

He lived a long time ago in a place called Northumbria. He worked as a cowherd at a monastery named Streonæshalch, which is now called Whitby Abbey.

At first, Cædmon did not know how to make songs or poems. He felt he could not join the other monks when they sang and played the harp. Because he could not sing, he often left the feasts early to sleep with the animals. His life changed forever because of a special night and a mysterious dream. He became a very important person in the history of English writing.

One night, while he was sleeping, someone came to him in a dream.

This person asked him to sing about the beginning of all created things. At first, Cædmon was afraid and said he could not sing. But then, he began to sing a beautiful poem praising God. When he woke up, he remembered every single word he had sung. He went to see the leader of the monastery, a woman named St. Hilda. She and her advisors thought his gift was from God. They gave him a test by asking for a poem about sacred history.

He passed the test and became a monk.

We know about Cædmon because of a man named Bede.

Bede was a historian who wrote a famous book called the *Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum*. This book tells the story of how Cædmon turned lessons into sweet verses. Bede said that Cædmon's poems were so beautiful they made people think about heaven. While many other poets from that time are mentioned in old books, we only have real details about three: Bede, Alfred the Great, and Cædmon. Most other names from that era are not proven to be real people. Bede's writing is the only reason we know Cædmon's story at all.

Cædmon's work is very special to people who study old languages.

His only surviving poem is called *Cædmon's Hymn*. It is a short poem with only nine lines. It is one of the oldest examples of Old English poetry ever found. Some scholars think his name might actually come from a Celtic language. This might mean he could speak more than one language. We think he was active between the years 657 and 684. In 1898, people even built a cross in his honor at St. Mary's Church in Whitby.

Cædmon's story connects to many things we see in history today. His life shows how people used songs to share their beliefs and stories. Even though he was a simple cowherd, his words lasted for hundreds of years. Many different churches, like the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, honor him as a saint. This shows how much people value his talent and his spirit. His story is a famous example of how art can come from unexpected places. Today, we look at his nine lines to see how the English language first began to sing.
