He is most well known for being the Poet Laureate. This is a special title given to a poet to honor the king. Austin was chosen for this role in 1896. This happened after the great poet Tennyson died in 1892. For several years, the position stayed empty. Many people thought about different writers for the job. Some candidates caused arguments or said no to the honor. Eventually, Austin was appointed to the post. He brought a sense of tradition to the role.

Austin had a very busy way of working. He started his career as a barrister, which is a type of lawyer. After he inherited money from an uncle, he left law for books. He became a very skilled editor for papers like the National Review. He also worked as a reporter for The Standard.

He traveled to many important places for his job. He went to the Vatican in 1870. He even visited the King of Prussia during a war. He once met a German leader named Otto von Bismarck. These jobs helped him understand the big events of his time.

His life began in Headingley, near Leeds, on May 30, 1835. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family. His father, Joseph Austin, was a merchant in Leeds. Austin went to several colleges to study. He graduated from the University of London in 1853. In 1865, he tried to run for a political office in Taunton. He did not win that election, but he kept working. Later, he married a woman named Hester Jane Homan-Mulock. They met in a very sweet way through a photograph. He saw her picture in a friend's album and asked about her.

As a writer, Austin had many different styles. He wrote poems, plays, and books of prose. Some people liked his descriptions of nature. He wrote about English woods and fields. He also wrote about the big mountains in the Alps.

Some critics thought his poetry was not as good as others. They even gave him nicknames like "Banjo Byron." Some felt he got his big job because of his political friends.

Even though he is not as famous now, his name lives on. His work helped shape the literature of the Victorian Age. Some people still look at his life to learn about history. For example, the musician Van Morrison used one of Austin's book titles for a song.
