He did his real work in his spare time. This work is called textual criticism. It means looking very closely at old Greek and Latin books to find mistakes. He worked hard as an independent researcher. This earned him a high reputation in the academic world. In 1892, he became a professor of Latin at University College London. Later, in 1911, he became the Kennedy Professor of Latin at the University of Cambridge. He spent the rest of his life there.

As a scholar, Housman was known for being very serious and sometimes sharp. He believed that scholars must have strong brains to do their jobs well. He compared a textual critic to a dog hunting for fleas. He liked to find and fix errors in old writings. He worked on many famous authors like Juvenal, Manilius, and Lucan. One of his biggest projects was the Astronomicon by Manilius. This was a very difficult book about astrology. He spent twenty-seven years working on its five volumes. He finished the final volume in 1930.

Housman was also a very important poet. In 1896, he published a collection called A Shropshire Lad.

This book contained 63 poems. The poems often dealt with sadness and death. Many people found his words very moving. His poems became especially popular during World War I. Musicians also loved his work and set his poems to music. He later published another collection called Last Poems in 1922. He thought of his poetry as being less important than his scholarly work.

In his private life, Housman enjoyed many simple pleasures. He liked walking in the country and traveling to France. He was a man who valued deep thought and hard work. Housman died in 1936 at the age of 77.
