She lived during the late 12th century, roughly between the years 1160 and 1215. We do not know her real name or exactly where she was born. She used a pen name that came from her own writing. In her poems, she wrote, "My name is Marie, and I am from France." This helped her name stick for hundreds of years. Scholars believe she was a very smart and highly educated woman. She could speak and write in many different languages. These included Latin, Middle English, and several versions of Old French.

Marie is most famous for writing a collection called the Lais. These are twelve short narrative poems that tell exciting stories. She said she heard these tales from Breton minstrels, who were traveling singers. Her poems used a special rhythm called eight-syllable verse. The stories often show people facing adventures that happen to them. Some tales include magic or the supernatural, which people call the merveilleux. For example, one story is about a werewolf named Bisclavret. Another poem, called Lanval, tells of a fairy woman.

Writing was a very different job in the Middle Ages. Making books was a slow and expensive process. It could take fifteen months just to copy the Bible by hand. Marie used her skill to make her words stand out. She added many tiny details to her poems. This helped her readers imagine the scenes clearly. She also used subtle writing that required people to look closely. She believed her ability to write came from God. This gave her the confidence to share her ideas with the world.

Marie wrote more than just her famous Lais. She also wrote a large collection of fables, which are short stories. Many of these were translations of Aesop's Fables from Middle English. She also wrote about religious topics, like the Legend of the Purgatory of St. Patrick. Some scholars even think she wrote a story called The Life of Saint Audrey. Her work was very popular with important people like counts and knights. Some of her poems were dedicated to King Henry II of England. Others were dedicated to a person called Count William.

Even though she lived so long ago, Marie's work still matters. Her Lais helped shape the way people wrote romance stories for a long time. Her writing showed a deep care for justice and the poor. She often wrote about how people should be treated fairly. Today, we can still find her poems in special books called manuscripts. Only five manuscripts contain her Lais, but many more contain her fables. People all over the world still study her beautiful and clever words.
