He is best known for writing a masterpiece called Tristan. This work is a courtly romance, which is a type of story about love and noble adventures. His writing is considered one of the greatest narrative works of the German Middle Ages. It is often grouped with other famous stories like the Nibelungenlied and Parzival. Even hundreds of years later, his stories still inspire artists. For example, the composer Richard Wagner used his work to create his famous opera, Tristan und Isolde, in 1865.

Gottfried had a very unique way of writing his stories. He used complex patterns of sounds to make his words flow. He played with rhyme, alliteration, and assonance to create musical patterns. He also used a tool called irony very skillfully. Irony is when a writer says one thing but means something else. He used this to create funny moments or very sad ones. He might have even used irony to hide his true opinions about society. This helped him avoid getting into trouble with powerful people.

We do not know everything about Gottfried's life. We do know he likely lived in the city of Strasbourg. He was probably a man of high social standing. He likely held an important job in his home city. However, he was not a knight. In German, he is called Meister, which means master, rather than Herr, which means sir. His writing shows he had a very high level of education. He knew a lot about Latin books, music, and even hunting.

Gottfried's story of Tristan is quite long and detailed. The poem has 19,548 lines written in rhyming couplets. He used a special trick in the beginning of the poem. The first letters of certain lines form an acrostic. An acrostic is a word hidden in the first letters of lines. These letters spell out the names Gotefrid, Tristan, and Isolde. They also spell Dieterich, which was likely the name of his patron.

This story is different from other tales of that time. In most stories, heroes are brave knights who win through fighting. Tristan is different because he is more of an artist and a trickster. He uses his wits and his mind to navigate his life. His story explores how intense love can clash with the rules of society.
