It was written in Middle High German by an unknown poet. This poet likely lived in the region of Passau. This work is very important because it was the first heroic epic written in the German language. It helped start a whole new style of written poetry for the area. Today, people call it the "German Iliad" because it is so powerful.

The story is split into two main parts. In the first part, a hero named Siegfried travels to Worms. He wants to marry the Burgundian princess Kriemhild. Siegfried is a legendary warrior who once killed a dragon. He bathed in the dragon's blood to make his skin tough. However, a man named Hagen kills Siegfried using a trick.

The second part follows Kriemhild after she marries Etzel, the king of the Huns. She wants revenge for her husband's death. She invites her brothers to a feast, which leads to a great battle. This battle causes the death of the Burgundians and the destruction of Etzel's kingdom.

This epic comes from older stories that people told out loud. These oral traditions were based on heroic legends from the 5th and 6th centuries. These legends spread across almost all Germanic-speaking lands in Europe. You can find similar stories in Scandinavian tales like the Poetic Edda.

Scholars believe the poem grew from these spoken tales into a written form. Some think there was one original version that changed over time. Others believe many different versions always existed at once.

Many people still connect with this story through art and music. The composer Richard Wagner used these legends for his famous operas. Although his work uses some different Norse sources, the spirit of the legend remains. The poem has also been used for many different political reasons in the past. Today, we look at it as a powerful piece of medieval literature.
