An epic is a very long story poem. This poem tells the adventures of the Visigothic hero, Walter of Aquitaine. It is important because it blends old German legends with Latin writing styles. The poem uses 1,456 verses written in a special rhythm. This rhythm is called dactylic hexameter. It was the traditional way to write famous Latin poems in ancient times.

The story follows a series of exciting battles. It begins when kings give hostages to keep peace during wars. Waltharius and a man named Hagano become hostages and grow up as brothers in arms. They even fight in the armies of Attila. Later, Waltharius escapes with Hiltgunt and a great treasure. A king named Guntharius chases them to take the treasure. He brings twelve knights to find them in the Vosges mountains. Waltharius wears fine armor made by a smith named Wieland. He fights the knights one by one in single combats. In the end, the men are all wounded, but Hiltgunt helps them by binding their wounds.

We know about the author through records from a monk named Ekkehard IV. He died in the year 1060. Ekkehard IV wrote that the poem was made by an earlier monk named Ekkehard I. This first Ekkehard likely wrote the poem for his teacher, Geraldus. We think the poem was written no later than the year 920. This is because Ekkehard I became a deacon in 957. He was probably not a young man at that time. The poem was later dedicated to Erchanbald, the bishop of Strasbourg.

Many interesting facts exist about this old poem. Scholars found that the poem uses many phrases from Vergil's Aeneid. This is another very famous Latin epic from long ago. Some people think the story might be based on older songs that are now lost. There are even fragments of an Old English version called Waldere. These were found in 1860 and consist of 15 lines each. Different versions of the story appear in other places too. For example, a Polish version includes the story in a book from the 13th or 14th century.

This poem connects to many other famous tales. Some people see links between this story and the legend of the Nibelungen. The way the characters fight is similar to other old Germanic tales. The story of Hiltgunt might even come from a much older myth. In that myth, a woman named Hildr could raise the dead with songs. This was seen as a way to show the struggle between light and darkness. Even today, people study Waltharius to understand how old stories change over time.
