The story begins during a time of war. Kings gave hostages to keep peace. Waltharius and a man named Hagano were hostages. They grew up to be brothers in arms. They fought in the armies of Attila. Later, Waltharius escaped with a woman named Hiltgunt. They took a great treasure with them.

A king named Guntharius chased them. He wanted the treasure for himself. He brought twelve knights to find them. Waltharius fought the knights one by one. He wore fine armor made by a smith named Wieland. In the end, the men were all hurt. Hiltgunt helped them by binding their wounds. The fighters became friends again.

A monk named Ekkehard wrote the poem. He may have written it for his teacher. He used a special rhythm for his verses. This rhythm is called dactylic hexameter. It was the old way to write Latin poems.
