He lived in the city of Strasbourg. He wrote a very famous story called Tristan. This story is a courtly romance. That is a type of tale about love and heroes. Gottfried was likely a well-educated man. He knew a lot about music and hunting. He also knew much about Latin books.

Gottfried used a very special way of writing. He used many patterns of sounds. He also used irony. Irony is when a writer says one thing but means another. This can be funny or sad. His story was very long. It had 19,548 lines of rhyming verse.

The story is about a man named Tristan and a woman named Isolde. They drink a magic potion by mistake. This potion makes them fall in love. They find a secret cave to live in.
