It was composed in Middle High German by an anonymous poet. This author likely lived in the Passau region. The poem is a foundational work of German literature. It was the first heroic epic written in the German vernacular. This achievement helped establish a new genre of written heroic poetry. Today, scholars often call it the "German Iliad" because of its immense scale and power.

The poem is built upon a deep oral tradition. These stories were based on Germanic heroic legends from the 5th and 6th centuries. These legends spread throughout almost all Germanic-speaking Europe. You can find similar themes in Scandinavian works like the Poetic Edda and the Völsunga saga. The Nibelungenlied translates these spoken legends into a sophisticated written form. This transition from orality to literacy allowed the story to be preserved for centuries.

The narrative is divided into two distinct parts. In the first part, the hero Siegfried travels to Worms. He seeks to marry the Burgundian princess Kriemhild. Siegfried is famous for slaying a dragon and bathing in its blood. This act gave him nearly impenetrable skin. However, a small spot between his shoulder blades remained vulnerable. The Burgundian vassal Hagen eventually murders Siegfried by spearing him in this spot.

The second part focuses on Kriemhild's quest for vengeance. After Siegfried's death, Kriemhild marries Etzel, the king of the Huns. She eventually invites her brothers and Hagen to Etzel's kingdom. Her goal is to destroy those who killed her first husband. This plan results in a massive tragedy. The Burgundians are killed, Etzel's kingdom is destroyed, and Kriemhild herself dies.

Scholars study many different versions of this epic. There are 37 known manuscripts and fragments in existence. Eleven of these manuscripts are essentially complete. The three oldest complete manuscripts are labeled A, B, and C. Manuscript A is in Munich at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Manuscript B is in the St. Gallen Stiftsbibliothek. Manuscript C is held at the Baden State Library in Karlsruhe.

Because of their immense historical value, these three manuscripts are inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.

Textual analysis shows that these manuscripts vary in their specific wording. However, the general order of events and character actions remain stable. Scholars debate how these variations began. Some believe all versions come from a single original archetype. Others suggest the poem always existed in many different forms. This variance may be a result of the shift from spoken tales to written books. The oldest versions are often called the Not-version and the Lied-version.

The legacy of the Nibelungenlied is complex and spans many fields. It heavily influenced the music of Richard Wagner. His famous operatic cycle draws from these legends, though he used Old Norse sources as well. The poem has also been used for political purposes throughout history. It was used in nationalist and Nazi propaganda during the 20th century. Today, it is studied as one of the most powerful epics of the Middle Ages.
