Brunhild is a very important figure from old Germanic legends.

Her name comes from old words for armor and conflict. Some people believe she was based on a real queen named Brunhilda of Austrasia. This queen lived in the sixth century and was a Visigothic princess. Other stories say she was a valkyrie, which is a brave female warrior. In the Norse tradition, she is often called a shieldmaiden.

These different stories make her one of the most famous characters in legend.

In many versions, the story follows a hero named Sigurd. One famous tale says Sigurd finds Brunhild sleeping on a mountain. She is wearing armor that seems to grow into her skin.

To wake her, Sigurd must cut the armor away. Brunhild says she will only marry a man who knows no fear. Later, a king named Gunnar wants to marry her. Sigurd helps by switching shapes with Gunnar to ride through a wall of flame. This trick allows Gunnar to win her hand in marriage.

Conflict arises later between Brunhild and a woman named Gudrun. The two women have a loud quarrel while washing their hair in a river.

Brunhild believes her husband Gunnar is the bravest man. However, Gudrun reveals that Sigurd was the one who actually rode through the flames. Gudrun shows Brunhild a ring as proof of Sigurd's deeds. This discovery makes Brunhild very angry. She then asks for Sigurd to be killed, which eventually happens.

The stories about her life are found in many old books. The Prose Edda was written by Snorri Sturluson around the year 1220.

There is also a collection called the Poetic Edda from Iceland. This collection includes many poems about Sigurd and Brunhild. Some of these poems, like the Völsunga saga, tell the full story. The saga was likely written in Norway during the second half of the thirteenth century. These texts help us understand how the legends changed over time.

Brunhild's story has inspired many artists through the years. The famous composer Richard Wagner used her in his large opera cycle.

Most people today think of her based on his version. In some Scandinavian poems, Brunhild dies after Sigurd.

She asks to be burned on the same pyre as him. This shows how deeply the characters are linked in these myths. Her legend remains a huge part of how we study old stories.
