Ragnarök is a famous series of events in Norse mythology.

It describes a foretold time of great change and destruction. Many important gods are expected to perish during a massive battle. These figures include Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdall, and Loki. The event involves catastrophic natural disasters like the burning of the world. Eventually, the entire world will sink deep under the water.

This story is a major part of Germanic studies and history.

Many things happen to signal the start of these events. First, three long winters arrive without any summer to follow.

During this time, greed causes people to break their family bonds. The sun and the moon are swallowed by great wolves. Stars vanish from the sky as the earth sinks into the sea. Flames from Muspelheim reach the heavens, and the world tree Yggdrasil shudders.

Finally, a great battle breaks out between the gods and invaders.

We know these stories from very old written sources. The Poetic Edda was compiled during the 13th century. It contains poems like Lokasenna, which mentions the end of an age. Another source is the Prose Edda, written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century.

These books explain how the gods lived and what they feared. Some people also call this event the "Twilight of the Gods." This name became popular because of the composer Richard Wagner. He used it for his famous opera in 1876.

Specific details about the battle are found in these ancient texts. Odin fights the wolf Fenrir but is swallowed whole.

Then, Odin's son Víðarr kills the wolf to avenge his father. Thor fights the great serpent Jörmungandr and wins the fight. However, Thor dies after taking only nine steps due to venom.

The fire giant Surtr also enters the battle with a bright sword. These stories show how the old gods faced their final destiny.

Even though the world ends, it is not the final end. The earth will rise from the water once more.

This new world will be green, fertile, and very fresh. The surviving gods will meet again at a field called Iðavöllr. Two humans named Líf and Lífþrasir will survive to repopulate the earth. They will hide in a forest and live on morning dew. This cycle shows that new life can grow after a hard time.
