Many people call this creature the Midgard Serpent or the World Serpent. It is a very large sea serpent that lives in the ocean. The serpent is so huge that it circles the entire Earth. It even bites its own tail to hold itself in place. This shape is often called an ouroboros. The serpent's presence helps define the boundaries of the world.

Jörmungandr is part of a famous family. It is the middle child of the god Loki and the giant Angrboða. The god Odin took Loki's three children away from the world of the Æsir. These children were the wolf Fenrir, the ruler Hel, and the serpent Jörmungandr. Odin tossed the serpent into the great ocean around Midgard. The serpent grew and grew in the deep water. Eventually, it became large enough to surround the whole world.

The thunder god Thor is the main enemy of the serpent. They have a very long history of fighting each other. In one story, Thor tried to lift a huge cat. This cat was actually the serpent disguised by magic.

Thor could only lift one paw off the ground. This was still a very impressive feat of strength. Another story tells of a fishing trip with a giant named Hymir. Thor used the head of an ox as bait. He pulled the serpent from the waves during this trip.

People in the past carved stories of these battles into stone. The Altuna Runestone and the Ardre VIII stone show these myths. These stones date back to the 8th or 10th century. They show that people told these stories for hundreds of years. One version of the myth says Thor killed the serpent. Other versions say the giant cut the fishing line. This allowed the serpent to sink back into the sea. These ancient carvings help us understand how the myths were shared.

All these stories lead to a final event called Ragnarök. One sign of this event is when the serpent lets go of its tail. The sea will flood and the serpent will move onto land. It will spray poison into the air and the water. Thor and Jörmungandr will meet for a final battle on a plain called Vigrid. Thor will kill the serpent, but he will also die. He will fall after walking nine paces because of the serpent's venom.
