Loki is a famous god in Norse mythology.

Many people describe him as a trickster god. This means he often uses cleverness to fool others. He is also a shape shifter. He can change his body to look like a fly or a salmon. He has even appeared as a mare or an elderly woman.

When he was a mare, he gave birth to Sleipnir. Sleipnir is a special horse with eight legs.

Loki has a very large and unusual family. He is the son of Fárbauti and Laufey. He is married to the goddess Sigyn. They have two sons named Narfi and Váli. Loki also has children with a giant named Angrboða. These children include the wolf Fenrir and the serpent Jörmungandr. He is also the father of the goddess Hel.

These children often play big roles in the stories of the gods.

Loki's actions sometimes lead to great trouble. He was involved in the death of the beloved god Baldr. Because of this, the gods decided to punish him. Odin's son Váli bound Loki with the entrails of one of Loki's own sons. The goddess Skaði placed a serpent above him. This serpent drips venom onto Loki while he is tied up.

His wife Sigyn tries to help by catching the venom in a bowl. When the bowl is full, she must empty it. During that moment, the venom hits Loki and causes him to writhe in pain. Some say this movement causes earthquakes.

We know about Loki through old books and stones. The Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda contain many stories about him. Snorri Sturluson wrote the Prose Edda in the 13th century. You can also see Loki on the Snaptun Stone or the Gosforth Cross.

Some scholars wonder about the meaning of his name. It might come from a word meaning loops or knots. This could link him to being a "tangler" or an inventor of fishnets.

Loki is expected to return during a time called Ragnarök. This is a great battle between the gods and the giants. During this time, Loki will break free from his bonds. He is said to fight against the gods. He has a special rivalry with the god Heimdallr. The two are predicted to kill each other during the battle.
