He is known as the best of all horses. Many stories describe him as a grey horse. The most famous thing about him is his eight legs.

He is the steed of the god Odin. Because of his many legs, he can travel to many places. Some stories say he can even ride to Hel, the world of the dead.

The story of his birth is quite unusual.

Long ago, the gods wanted to build a strong wall. A builder offered to do the work in three seasons. He asked to use his stallion, Svaðilfari, for help. Loki helped the builder by becoming a mare. This led to a strange event between the two horses. Later, Loki gave birth to a grey foal with eight legs. This foal was Sleipnir, the best horse among gods and men.

We know about Sleipnir from many old books. The Poetic Edda was put together in the 13th century. The Prose Edda was also written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson.

These books tell us how important the horse is. Other old stories like the Völsunga saga also mention him. In that saga, a hero named Sigurðr meets a horse from Sleipnir's kin. This horse was named Grani and was very handsome.

Archaeologists have found real clues about Sleipnir in the ground.

Two stone carvings from the 8th century show eight-legged horses. These are the Tjängvide image stone and the Ardre VIII image stone. They are found on the island of Gotland in Sweden. Scholars think these stones show riders like Odin on Sleipnir. One stone even shows a rider arriving at the world of the dead.

Sleipnir still appears in many things today.
