It is a famous collection of stories and lessons about Norse mythology. This subject covers the myths of the North Germanic peoples. Most people call this book the Younger Edda to tell it apart from the Poetic Edda. It serves as a main source for what we know about these ancient beliefs today. The book helps us understand how people long ago thought about the world. It is a treasure for anyone studying history or old stories.

This book is divided into four main parts. First, the Prologue gives a story about how the gods began.

Finally, the section called Háttatal discusses different ways to write traditional poems. Each part helps teach the reader about different aspects of culture.

An Icelandic man named Snorri Sturluson likely wrote or gathered this work. He lived during the early 13th century. Snorri was a scholar, a historian, and a lawspeaker. Some thinkers believe he wrote every word himself. Other scholars think he mostly compiled existing stories and poems. They believe he might have only written the Háttatal section. Even with this debate, his name is closely tied to the book. His work helped preserve these old traditions for many years.

We know about the Prose Edda because of old handwritten copies called manuscripts. Seven of these manuscripts have survived to the present day.

The Codex Regius is one of the most famous copies. It is very complete and is often used for new translations. Other important copies include the Codex Upsaliensis and the Codex Wormianus. Each copy is slightly different from the others. These differences allow researchers to study the text in many ways. They help experts see how the stories might have changed over time.

Learning about the Prose Edda is like finding a key to an old world. It connects modern readers to the way people spoke and sang long ago. The book shows how poetry and storytelling were linked in the past. Many people still translate this book into English today. They use it to explore the deep roots of Northern European culture. It reminds us that stories are a powerful way to pass down ideas. Studying it helps us see the amazing ways humans have shared their beliefs.
