People call it the "Royal Book" or the "King's Book." It is a collection of many Old Norse poems. These poems are part of the Poetic Edda. This book is very important to history. It is the only source for most of these poems. Without this book, these stories might be lost forever. Scholars often use the letter [R] to name it. Some also call it [K] for Konungsbók.

This book is made of 45 vellum leaves. Vellum is a material made from animal skin. The book used to be even larger. It originally had eight more leaves. Those eight leaves are now missing. The poems inside have many different names. Some are called Völuspá or Hávamál. Others include Lokasenna and Alvíssmál. There are also poems about Helgi Hundingsbane. Some poems are even part of a group called the "Great Lacuna." This term means a part of the text is missing.

A man named Brynjólfur Sveinsson found the book. He lived in Iceland. He was the Bishop of Skálholt in 1643. He kept the book for many years. In 1662, he decided to give it away. He sent it as a gift to King Frederick III. This king lived in Denmark. This gift is why the book has a royal name. It stayed in the Royal Library in Copenhagen for a long time.

The book finally returned to Iceland in 1971. This happened on April 21. People did not use a plane for the trip. Air travel was not very safe for such a treasure. Instead, the book traveled by ship. A military escort went on the ship too. They had to keep the book safe during the journey. Now, the book stays at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. It is a very safe place for it.
