arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Book of Taliesin is a famous collection of Welsh poems. It is a very special treasure for people in Wales. This book holds fifty-six poems that tell many different stories. Some of these poems might be very old. They could even date back to the sixth century. They are linked to a real poet named Taliesin.

The book contains many different kinds of writing. Some are praise songs for great leaders like Urien Rheged. Other poems are called elegies, which are sad songs for people who have died. You can find poems about the stars or even a battle of trees. One poem says the poet sailed to another world with King Arthur. There are also hymns and poems about the history of Egypt.

Experts have worked hard to find out when the book was made. A man named John Gwenogvryn Evans thought it was from around 1275. Another scholar named Daniel Huws said it was from the early 1300s. Most experts now agree with the 1300s date. The book is called Peniarth MS 2. It is not complete because some of its original pages are missing.

This book has a long journey through history. It was once kept at a mansion called Hengwrt near Dolgellau. A man named Robert Vaughan collected many books there. Later, Sir John Williams gave the collection to the National Library of Wales in 1907. You can still see the book there today. Some marks in the margins might show how much people valued the poems.

The poems often talk about a spirit called Awen. Awen is a special kind of poetic inspiration. Some people think Taliesin was a shaman, which is a person who connects with nature. The poems show that humans are a part of the natural world. They suggest that all things in the universe are connected through this creative spirit. This makes the poetry feel very deep and meaningful.
