Book of Taliesin

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Book of Taliesin is a very famous collection of Welsh poems. Most experts say the book was made in the early 1300s. However, many of the fifty-six poems inside are much older. Some might even date back to the sixth century. They may come from a real poet named Taliesin.

The poems cover many different topics. Some are praise songs for great kings like Urien Rheged. Other poems are elegies, which are sad songs for people who have died. You can even find poems about the stars or a battle of trees. One poem even says the poet sailed to another world with King Arthur.

Some poems talk about a special creative spirit called Awen. This spirit helps people make art. The poems show that humans are part of nature. They show how all things in the world are linked.

Today, the book is kept at the National Library of Wales. It was once part of a large collection at a place called Hengwrt. It is a true treasure of Welsh history.
