Dafydd ap Gwilym was a great Welsh poet. He lived in the Middle Ages. Some say he was born around 1315. Others think he lived a little later. He came from a noble family. Poetry was a strong tradition in his family. He was not a professional poet by trade.

Dafydd wrote about love and nature. His poems are very personal. Most poets back then stayed far from their work. Dafydd wrote about his own feelings and life. He used a special way of writing called cywydd. He also helped make a style called cynghanedd popular. These styles are still used by Welsh poets today.

His work shows how Welsh culture stayed strong. At that time, England held power in Wales. Even so, Dafydd's poems showed a unique Welsh way of life. He wrote about the joy of summer. He also wrote about love. Some of his poems are funny. Others use metaphors, which are words that stand for other things. For example, he once wrote about a woman making a belt. This was a way to talk about desire. About 170 of his poems still exist today.
