arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi wrote a famous piece of music. We call this work the Stabat Mater. He wrote it in 1736. This was during the final weeks of his life. He was very sick with a disease called tuberculosis. He lived in a monastery in Pozzuoli when he finished it.

The music is for solo singers and string instruments. It uses a soprano singer and an alto singer. The instruments are two violins and a viola. The work has twelve parts called movements. Each part has a name from a special text.

Many people love this music. A man named Jean-Jacques Rousseau called it very touching. Other famous composers used his work too. For example, J.S. Bach made a new piece based on it. Some people in the past did not like it. They thought the style was too light. They felt it was too much like a funny opera.

Today, the music is very well known. We can still find many recordings of it. People all over the world still listen to it. It remains one of his most celebrated works.
