Many people believe in a place for those who have died. This is often called the underworld. It is thought to be below the world where we live.

These ideas are very old. They can be found in almost every group of people.

Many myths tell of a journey to this place. Some stories say souls must cross a big river or a lake.

Other stories say people need special ceremonies to enter. For example, an old Greek story says a person stayed as a ghost until they were buried. Some myths say important people wear special clothes to help them travel.

In some tales, heroes visit the underworld on a brave mission. Many different faiths have their own names for this place. The Aztecs called it Mictlan. The Greeks spoke of Hades. In Chinese folk religion, it is called Diyu. Many cultures also have rulers or guards for the dead. These figures watch over the souls in the underworld.
