Many Christians believe in a place called Hell.

Some say it is a place for those who do not follow God. Some thinkers say it is a state of being away from God.

Christian Bibles use different words for this idea. One word is Sheol. In old Jewish belief, Sheol was a dark place under the ground.

Another word is Hades. Many Bibles use Hades to mean the grave or the place of the dead. Some people think this state is a time of being unconscious.

A third word is Gehenna. This name comes from a real place near Jerusalem. The New Testament says Gehenna can involve fire.

Some groups, like Eastern Orthodox Christians, have a unique view. They believe God is always present. To them, Hell is not a separate place. Instead, they say God's love feels like fire. For some, this love brings great joy. For others, it feels like pain or sorrow. They believe how a person responds to God's love changes how they feel it.
