In many Christian faiths, it is a very important idea. It is seen as the first step to be close to God again. To be contrite means a person feels real sorrow in their soul. They also want to stop doing wrong things in the future.

In the Catholic Church, there are two types of contrition. The first is called perfect contrition. This happens when a person feels sorry because they love God. The second is called imperfect contrition. This is also called attrition. This happens when a person feels sorry for other reasons. They might fear punishment or feel bad about their guilt.

Some thinkers have different views on these ideas. Martin Luther once said that imperfect contrition was not true repentance. He thought it was just acting a certain way. However, the Catholic Church teaches that even imperfect contrition is a gift from God. It helps prepare a person's soul to receive grace.

This feeling is meant to be deep and sincere. It is a way for people to turn toward a new life.
