In some Christian faiths, people believe in mortal sin. This is a very serious type of sin. It is different from a venial sin. A venial sin is a smaller mistake. It can make a person's bond with God weaker. But a mortal sin can pull a person away from God's grace entirely.

For an act to be a mortal sin, three things must be true. First, the act must be a grave matter. This means it is a very serious thing to do. Second, the person must have full knowledge. This means they know the act is wrong. Third, they must give full consent. This means they choose to do it on purpose.

Some examples of grave acts include stealing a lot of property. Other examples are being drunk or missing Mass on Sunday. Some people also see sins against the Holy Spirit as very serious.

If a person is truly sorry, they can be forgiven. Many people use the sacrament of Confession to do this. They talk to a priest to ask for mercy. This helps them fix their relationship with God.
